Imported Photos 00483Linda McGowan is a writer, world traveller, nurse, and advocate for accessibility in Canada and throughout the world. She has touched on every continent, travelling to more than 180 countries in the last 30 years, experiencing a climb to 18,500 feet on Mount Everest using a TrailRider, to 16,000 feet in a basket on a porter’s back to Annapurna Base Camp in Nepal.  Linda has completed her first memoir “Travelling the World with MS…IN A Wheelchair” a collection of true stories and anecdotes about her travels. Her factual, humorous stories will encourage others with or without a disability to follow their dreams. Linda does not allow mobilizing in a wheelchair to be a deterrent to her adventures around the globe.

Linda has been a long-term volunteer with the MS Society of Canada. She has been a member of the editorial board of the MS Society BC Yukon Division,  Lower Mainland Chapter newsletter, Shared Voices since its inception in 1995, Sam Sullivan Disability Foundation, and Seniors Services Society.  With the MS Society of Canada, she represented them in the A&W MS Campaign in 2014. She has been published in Abilities Magazine, Healthvine, In the Loop, and SCI Society SPIN. Linda has played an integral role researching and writing to educate readers on current MS treatments, MS management strategies, accessibility, and adventure travel near and far. Linda’s travels to India were featured in the September 2008 issue of Canadian Living. She recieved a Canadian Council of the Arts grant to support her writing, and was shortlisted in the 2012 Surrey International Writers Conference Non-Fiction contest. In addition, Linda composes speeches for special events in the community. She was the keynote speaker for the International Seating Symposium in 2016, where she spoke about accessibility and how to create your own.

The documentary “Access Challenge,” (2002) featured Linda participating on a mountain trek in British Columbia, the very first time that TrailRiders were used to facilitate people with disabilities to hike in the wilderness. She has sailed three times in Mobility Cup, the International Sailing Race for People with Disabilities, in various cities in Canada. Linda swims three times a week, and waterskies in summer.

A graduate from the Montreal General Hospital School of Nursing, she completed her BScN from the University of British Columbia, and an MBA from City University. She has worked more than 40 years in community health, with emphasis on palliative care, acute medicine, access, and support for families. She is involved in training home support workers, and mentors nursing and medical students.

Linda is devoted to advocating accessibility for people with disabilities. For  ten years, she was the Consumer Advocacy Manager for MVT Canadian Bus Inc. Currently, she is the Community Outreach Liaison for First Transit, the provider of HandyDART (paratransit) services. She is a critical link to transportation for residents and visitors alike in Metro Vancouver, BC. She expands the role by guiding people with disabilities, to sources of accessible transportation at their desired destination.

In September 2019, she will be participating in the first accessible Camino pilgrimage in Spain. She is one of 12 people with disabilities from all over the world to be selected to participate in this once in a lifetime trip. Follow her adventures on Instagram: travellingtheworldwithms.
